Venice is virtually a pedestrian only city and with the absence of cars and traffic in general walking is a relatively enjoyable experience. It can get busy in parts especially around popular attractions such as the Rialto Bridge where people like to stand and view the Grand Canal and take lots of photographs. If you do want to get around a bit quicker there are water taxis that can get you around a bit faster. The other option is a ride along the canals on a gondola which is generally considered a more romantic option. Gondola rides are also ideal way to see some of the sights of Venice rather than getting you from one place to another. Venice has lots to offer such as the Doge's Palace, Bell tower of St. Mark, the Clock tower and much more.
Getting to Venice by air will take you to Marco Polo Airport (VCE) on the mainland. Then you can take a water bus which will take about 75 minutes. Some airlines use Treviso Airport which is 16 miles away and the bus fare is very reasonable a transfers into Venice itself. The other airport is San Nicolo Airport which is for small charter flights but is mainly used by private pilots and for small private charter flights for business men or celebrities.
